Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:34-40

How It All Started

How It All Started In late October 2009 Amanda and Diana along with 4 year old Alexis ventured from Indiana to Washington DC on vacation. During their trip they encountered a few homeless lingering in the Metro Station near the White House. These homeless men were attempting to stay dry on a very rainy day. On the final day of their vacation they visited the National Zoo. Sitting on a bench nearby they observed the man to your right. Noticeably homeless, it was the condition of this poor man's feet that attracted their attention. The flesh of his feet appeared blackened and possibly rotting away. Amanda and Diana had never observed such a site.
The image of this poor homeless man kept emerging in the back of their minds. So Amanda and Diana had an 11x14 photo of this man's feet printed and they each have one hanging in their home as a daily reminder of what they saw.
After doing much research, Amanda and Diana discovered that foot conditions such as trench foot and tinea are prominent among the homeless. This is due to a range of factors, some of which are the lack of proper hygiene and clothing. But also since they have no shelter they have trouble keeping their feet and shoes dry especially if it is raining. Some homeless do not even have another change of socks so they wear the same pair for a very long time. The condition of their feet can get so bad that when they do remove their socks the flesh comes off too!
Keeping all of this in mind, Amanda and Diana learned how they could help make a homeless persons life a little more comfortable by doing something as simple as making care packages and sending them to homeless shelters all across the nation. And that idea is what has inspired Help For The Homeless. Find out how you can help.
